Introducing our new Air Motor Testing Rig

Teryair has installed a state of the art rig for testing and measuring horsepower, torque and speed of our Air Motors.

Apart from these basic parameters, the testing rig can also measure the stall torque, dynamic running torques and temperature buildup under load. All these parameters are recorded while continuously also measuring the air consumption. These features are available for the full range of air motors being manufactured by Teryair.


Teryair’s air motors are high quality performing motors and all our motors are ATEX Certified by default. 
Teryair also manufacturers completely lubrication free motors for use on environments where clean exhaust is needed.

Our testing setup has been commissioned today- 10th May 2021  and every air motor manufactured by Teryair will now come with a Certificate of Quality with test parameters recorded on this equipment.

This unique set-up utilises the latest slip ring torque transducers to measure real time torque under varying conditions. It can be used in both rotational directions, clockwise and anticlockwise

After every test, a digital report is generated capturing all the key information indicating the compliance of the motor to set standards.

How to use Teryair air motors for mixer applications

Why air motors for mixer applications?

Pneumatic motors are very suitable for use as stirrers for the following reasons.

  • Air Motors are explosion proof and safe for running in all kinds of explosive atmospheres. (ATEX certification is a must, all Teryair air motors are ATEX certified.
  • Air Motors are cool running – expanding air cools the motor naturally.
  • Air Motors are capable of being stalled with no damage to equipment and with no energy consumption when stalled.
  • Air Motors are compact and have higher power to weight ratio when compared to electric motors.
  • Air Motors are easy to manipulate speed and torque with a simple throttle valve, no expensive VFD drives are needed.
  • Air Motors are instantly reversible if needed.
Before you incorporate an air motor into your Mixer please make sure you follow these simple concepts.

Concept No 1. Air motor rotor Isolation

DO NOT  connect the mixer shaft directly to the motor rotor. See fig. No 1

This is incorrect and will lead to the shaft bending and axial loads coming directly onto the motor spindle bearing.

The result is premature failure of rotor bearing and possible air motor rotor bending and fast wearing of internal components.

The correct way is shown here in Fig No.2

This is correct because any shaft bending loads is properly absorbed by an intermediate bearing of proper size. Axial loads are also absorbed by this bearing. This bearing is chosen correctly depending on the shaft length and horse power and speed of the arrangement. Basically one can use a heavy duty bearing in this area that will absorb the bending loads and axial loads. Further replacement of such bearing is an economical and a simple job, compared to the air motor repair.

Concept No 2. Torque, Horsepower and Speed.

If speed of an air motor is reduced by reducing air input by a throttle valve, PLEASE BE AWARE that there will be a proportionate drop in horse power and torque, in some cases the motor is starved for air and simply cannot turn the impeller. It’s like trying to start a car in the 4th gear, there is simply not enough torque and it will stall.

Make sure that you have enough air supply coming to the motor

 All teryair motors are available with industry standard flange mounting to fit standard third party gear boxes. For any assistance with gear box selection please contact teryair.

Many users confuse cfm with pressure. Note that you must deliver enough cfm (flow rate of air in cubic feet per minute) as mentioned otherwise motor will not develop power.

A rule of thumb is that each 1 HP compressor electric motor size generates about 3-4 CFM of compressed air flow at about 90 PSI

Concept No 3. Impeller selection

General rule of thumb is to go with the smallest diameter of impeller that does the job. Larger impellers require exponentially higher horse power and higher air supply.

Fluid viscosity is a factor and the more viscous a fluid the more horse power is needed to effectively mix it. Use a higher horse power motor for higher viscosity fluids (Teryair makes upto 9.5 HP air motors)

What is an Air Motor?

An air motor or pneumatic motor – is a device that converts the stored energy in compressed air into rotary mechanical energy. Much like an electric motor where the electric energy is converted into rotary mechanical energy.

What is so great about Air Motors/ Pneumatic Motors?

In a nutshell, air motors have a high power to weight ratio, they do not get damaged when loaded to stall, they are naturally fine for use in Explosive atmospheres, they do not overheat – as expanding air is naturally cooling, and they can operate at a wide range of operating speeds. 

Yes they are easily reversible. 
Did I mention they cost far less than an equivalent electric motor? Electric motors have none of these features naturally, they have to be specially built in if at all and at high costs. 
Compressed air is increasingly ubiquitous in workspaces and it is a relatively simple matter to get an air motor connected.

Different types of Air Motors!

Depending on the mechanism on how the energy is converted, air motors can be piston-driven or vane driven, or turbine-driven.

Piston driven air motors are much like the old aircraft engines, with radial pistons where expanding air is converted into rotary motions. See pic. Piston motors tend to run slower compared to vane motors and they have higher torque and reliable starting.

Vane driven air motors rely on a set of vanes that create expanding chambers as they rotate, see pic. Again expanding air is converted into rotary motions. Vane motors operating speeds tend to be higher.

Turbine air motors depend both on on-air expansion as well as air velocity from the compressed air to generate the mechanical rotary energy.

All types of air motors are frequently mated with gearboxes to alter the torque-speed characteristics, usually to suit the application. They run very fast.

Do you need an Air Motor?

The short answer is no if there is a suitable electric motor available it is always better to simply go electric.
You need an air motor when any of the following conditions are present

  1. Explosive atmospheres ( Ex electric motors though available are very expensive)
  2. A variable load which is likely to stall the motor, such as a winch or hoist or mixers or conveyors, air motors can be stalled and re-started without any intervention.   3. A requirement for instant and simple reversing. All air motors reverse instantly when the air supply is reversed.
  4. A need for compactness
  5. A need for rugged outdoor duty.
